Best GPUs in 2023: Our top graphics card picks

Picking the right graphics card can be difficult given the sheer number of options on the market. Here are the best graphics cards to consider.

The graphics card is responsible for handling all the rendering tasks that are too intense for the CPU alone — think rendering video or playing games. The best graphics card depends on what you need. Should you have a Full HD monitor and only play some lighter games occasionally, you could get away with buying a cheaper GPU. If you're going all-out with 4K gaming and want the very best, a flagship GPU will likely be a better choice. We've tested a whole host of graphics cards to see which is the best GPU for gaming.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 and AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT have similar specifications and performance but are priced in completely different segments. The former officially costs $1,200, and the latter $900 (though, in reality, both GPUs can be found for less). You can also comfortably play games at 4K with ray tracing enabled on both cards. This guide will show you how to choose between the 7900 XT and the 4080.

AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT 1

Buying a good graphics card within the last couple of years has been nothing short of a grand adventure, filled with high prices, low stock levels, and a shortage of electronics to boot. Still, this hasn't halted AMD, Nvidia, and now Intel from launching new products, and today we're going to be looking at the new AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT and Radeon RX 7800 XT. The two GPUs are positioned to take on the RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070 graphics cards, hence the similarly named SKUs.

The central processing unit (CPU) is one of the most important components inside a PC. It's what handles all the calculations for just about everything you do on Linux or Windows and so the better the CPU you have, the more you'll be able to do. This guide showcases the best CPUs available right now from AMD and Intel, taking into account budget, performance, and value.

Why APUs can't truly replace low-end GPUs

Replacing low-end GPUs is like replacing cheap cars with scooters and saying it's actually better

Recently I wrote about how the demise of the budget GPU posed a big problem for PC gaming, namely that having to spend an extra $100 to $200 just to buy the cheapest GPU would be a serious hurdle for many gamers who simply don't have as much as others. Without newer budget models to replace older ones, these gamers would inevitably get left behind, finding their options to be inadequate for the latest and even sort of recent PC games. It could even harm the PC gaming ecosystem as a whole if these gamers are squeezed out of PC and switch to consoles.

Why I haven't upgraded my GPU in almost three years

Between weak generational upgrades and niche features, I'm just not as compelled to upgrade as I used to be.

I have an RTX 3060 Ti in my desktop today, and I've had it for nearly three years, which is the longest amount of time I've ever stuck with a GPU. After getting my very first GPU (the R9 380 4GB) in 2015, I upgraded it about every two years: to an RX 480 in 2016, an RX Vega 56 in 2018, a GTX 1080 Ti in 2020, and an RTX 3060 Ti in 2021. With the completion of the RTX 40 and RX 7000 series, I have quite a few options for new cards, too.

AMD's upcoming Ryzen 8000 'Strix Point' APU leak reveals 16 RDNA 3.5 GPU cores

AMD is expected to release its Ryzen 8000-series 'Strix Point' APUs next year, featuring a combination of Zen 5 CPU cores and RDNA 3.5 integrated graphics. Earlier leaks already revealed several key details about them, including the CPU core count, and now another massive leak has seemingly revealed the full GPU core count of what is likely a Strix Point engineering sample.

Intel Arc A750 1

Back in May, I theorized about a future where Nvidia and AMD both stop offering budget GPUs, and you need around $300 to purchase a new graphics card. With Nvidia, this is already a reality as the company hasn't offered a new GPU cheaper than $200 since its GTX 16 series, which was already a gimped version of the RTX 20 series. I always figured AMD would stick to the low end of the market since its only competition was Intel and because AMD has traditionally been one of the best manufacturers of budget cards.

How to use AMD Radeon ReLive to capture and stream your games

Radeon ReLive is the built-in solution AMD GPU users have for gameplay recording and streaming

While Microsoft, Sony, and Nvidia all got into casual gameplay recording in 2013, AMD graphics cards were noticeably lacking in that department. While Nvidia users could use ShadowPlay to easily record games, AMD users had no such equivalent. However, AMD has since caught up with Radeon ReLive, arguably surpassing Nvidia when it comes to recording games. Here's everything there is to know about Radeon ReLive and why it's a key reason that AMD GPUs still rank among the best gaming graphics cards.

Nearly a year after the launch of the RX 7000 series, AMD is finally plugging the massive gap between the RX 7600 and the flagship 7900 XT with the brand-new RX 7700 XT and 7800 XT. These two GPUs will go head-to-head with the RTX 4060 Ti and 4070 respectively, and will finally replace the older RX 6000 series in this price and performance segment. Although AMD is undeniably late to the party, at least it has something to show for it.

For many users, a 15-inch screen is the ideal size for a laptop. This is a size where you can still strike a great balance of portability and real estate. Most 17-inch laptops tend to be heavy, and 13-inch laptops just don't give you as much screen size to comfortably multitask.

There are two features that I love to see on a laptop. The first is an OLED display, and the second is a CPU that's speedy-fast. The new Acer Swift Edge 16 has both of those, and it is the reason why this became my favorite laptop during the three-week period that I had it.

Recent years have been tough for people buying GPUs on a budget. That was true in 2020, and it's still true today. AMD and Nvidia just don't offer good value cards like they used to. Still, there are some decent options in the $100 to $300 range for the value-conscious PC user. They're not the best graphics cards, but they'll do well enough for 1080p and even in some cases 1440p gaming at a good framerate.

When AMD released the Ryzen 7000-series desktop CPUs, the only AM5 motherboards around were high-end or mid-range models using the X670 chipset. Since then, the budget B650 and basic B620 chipsets have been released, dropping the bar to entry for the newest AM5 systems substantially. Pricing on CPUs and DDR5 memory have also dropped in the months since these new motherboards hit the market, making AM5 a good value look for any new system builders or those looking to upgrade.

The AMD AM5 platform is powerful, but which RAM is best for pairing with it?

When AMD first released the Ryzen 7000-series CPUs, the bar to entry was fairly high as it required a new motherboard and new RAM. Since then, prices have steadily come down, so the total cost of ownership is more affordable. The release of the B650 chipset brought mid-range and budget motherboard options to the market. And DDR5 RAM prices have dropped drastically, down to around the prices for comparable DDR4 capacities.
